Please read!!!
CHRM sent this email. I thought I would pass it on.
This is Urgent! DHS remains intent on pushing through its plan. It's up to each and every one of us to stop this.
Call the elected officials listed below and, tell them to:
“Stop the intake center from coming to the Bedford Atlantic armory shelter in Brooklyn..It’s bad for the homeless, bad for our communities and bad for New York City.
(for more ways to say you oppose the intake center, see the list of suggestions that follow this phone list.)
Elected Official to Call:
Mayor M ichael Bloomberg 212 788 3000 (they may transfer your call to 311- state that you want to give a message to the mayor)
Deputy Mayor Linda Gibbs 212-788-3000 ( they maytransfer your call to 311) either way state that you want to give a message to Deputy Mayor Gibbs)
NY State Assemblywoman Annette Robinson 718-399-7630
US Congresswoman Yvette D. Clark 718-287-1142
US congressman Edolphus "Ed" Towns 718-855-8018
Senator Charles Schumer 212-486-4430
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand 212-688-6262
Some other suggestions we have had for more things you can say:
"The vast majority of homeless men are in Manhattan. The Bedford Atlantic Armory Shelter is in the most oversaturated community in Brooklyn. Do not allow the Atlantic Armory to be used as a dumping ground. "
You can say" The homeless in Manhattan are terrified of the Atlantic Armory; they will not go there willingly. There is a good reason why police are posted inside. They would prefer to stay on the streets even in winter than to come over to Brooklyn. And there is no hospital close by to help them in Brooklyn."
Or say what you wish to say in your own words. It only takes a sentence. You can call once for each voting member of your family.
If the lines are busy, keep on calling!
It's up to you and me. Call on Monday

Scary stuff!!!
Killer keeps shooting at fatally hurt prison guard in Brooklyn
BY Joe Jackson and Jonathan Lemire
DAILY NEWS WRITERS
Monday, June 29th 2009, 4:00 AM
An off-duty state correction officer visiting family in Brooklyn was killed by a cold-blooded gunman who kept pumping bullets into his bleeding body, police and witnesses said. Jeremie Kane, 30, was shot twice in the head and four times in the chest moments after he stepped out of a Crown Heights barbershop at 12:45 a.m. Sunday, police said. Kane was already slumped over on the sidewalk and rapidly losing blood when the gunman fired his final rounds, witnesses said. "I looked out the window and a guy was lying on the ground," said witness Ahmed Mudhasser, who lives on the same Nostrand Ave. block where Kane was shot. When emergency personnel arrived, "The [paramedic] yelled, 'Stay with us! Try to breathe!'" said Mudhasser, 18. Kane, assigned to the upstate Sing Sing prison, died at Kings County Hospital minutes after he was shot in front of Millie's Infinite Image Salon. Kane had been hanging out in the barbershop for about an hour when he stepped outside to make a cell phone call, police said. Minutes later, he got into a confrontation with another man, who pulled out a high-powered handgun and started shooting, witnesses said. "I heard the shots," said a bartender at the neighboring Starlight Lounge who declined to give her name. "It could have been me that was killed." Investigators were not certain what prompted the deadly shooting and have not ruled out that it was a robbery attempt, a police source said. Patrons in the barbershop were not able to give detectives a clear description of the shooter. Investigators returned to the Crown Heights block hours later to look for surveillance video. Kane, who joined the Correction Department in 2005, had been on leave since May 23 after filing a workers' compensation claim, a department spokeswoman said. Kane was staying with his mother, who was too distraught to speak to reporters Sunday.

Last Night's Town Hall Meeting
Last night's meeting was very motivating and it made me optimistic that united we can win. It was great to see other communities realize the mayor's proposal (to make the armory the intake center for the entire city) is not only a Crown Heights problem. It's a Prospect Heights, Bedford Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene issue as well.
Brooklyn must stand up to the dictatorship of our current mayor. This mayor has no regard or loyalty to any borough, but his own -- Manhattan.
Borough President Marty Markowitz, Assemblyman Karim Camara, Letisha James and representatives of other local politicians: Ed Towns, Annette Robinson and mayoral candidate Bill Thompson also spoke in support of the community. Many may not agree with Letisha James, but I must say she gave a very inspiring and emotional speech that brought the audience to its feet. I believe there will be a rally on the steps of City Hall in the immediate future -- they need as many people as possible to attend. Once again, Councilmember Al Vann was a no show and there was no one from his office in attendance. I apologize for not getting more footage; I totally forgot I had my camera in my purse...oops.
The law firm of Gibson Dunn has been retained to represent our community in a lawsuit, if deemed necessary. The lead lawyer on the case Jim Walden, a Brooklyn resident, spoke. Would anyone object to The Rebirth of Bergen Street being a plantiff in this lawsuit? We would have to sign on and write a statement detailing how this proposal would impact our community and our quality of life.
Here is a link to Errol Louis' article on the Bed Atlantic Armory.

CB8 Meeting Thursday
This meeting is very important to our community. In 60 days our Mayor plans to turn the Bedford Atlantic Armory into the intake center for all five boroughs. All homeless men who need services from the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Brooklyn will have to go through this facility in order to get any services.
Keep in mind that before going to intake these men are not assessed. Therefore, we will have men in our community who have lost their jobs and are down on their luck as well as Level 3 sex offenders, pedophiles, etc.
We are not opposed to handling our fair share, but when it comes to homeless shelters and half way houses, is this the only neighborhood the mayor can come up with?
The Bloomberg Administration has reneged on their promises and we must make them accountable.
Please come and represent.

Block Assoc Next Meeting?
Hope some or all on the block all plan to make the June 8 meeting at 77th Pct.
Just wondering if we want to try present some our concerns formally, on behalf of the Block association. If so, we need to try to create an agenda.
Got a ton of info from the Bergen St/Kingston Ave Block association. They meet at Brower Library on St. Marks between N.Y. and Nostrand. It appears that it may be a good site for us as well.
They have similiar concerns and issues, but are much farther ahead with their outreach of homeowners, tenants, and merchants. Their president is willing to assist us in any that would be helpful.
Also have names of more political and city officials who are willing to speak to our group about services available to us. Will put together some info for our next meeting.

Important Email Addresses
Now that the weather is getting warmer, there are a lot of issues that are surfacing. We diligently called 311 as well as the 77th Precinct regarding the loud music/noise this past Friday. I don't believe it was as effective as we would have liked, but we must continue to call.
Aside from calling, perhaps sending emails to the following people will also help our cause in regards to the quality of life issues that we are currently facing.
Deputy Inspector John Cosgrove @ the 77th precint (email) John.Cosgrove@nypd.org
Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes (email) HynesC@Brooklynda.org and AdossaS@Brooklynda.org
Errol Louis NY Daily News (email) ErrolLouis@gmail.com (a resident of Crown Heights)
Mayor Michael Bloomberg (email) http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mayor.html
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz (email) askmarty@brooklynbp.nyc.gov
NY State Senator Karim Camara (email) CamaraK@assembly.state.ny.us
NYC Councilman Albert Vann (email) vann@council.nyc.ny.us (This is an election year for him and I think he will want to be more involved than he has been in previous years.)

Loud Music/Noise on Brooklyn Avenue
The bears who reside at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Bergen Street have woken up from hibernation. The bears slept soundly during the cold winter months with some stirs here and there, but today they're back with avengence.
Our neighbors on Brooklyn Avenue (their yard faces Bergen Street) have decided to inaugrate the warm weather with excessively loud music. Thus letting us know that summer will soon be here and we will once again be subjected to their loud music/noise.
There is nothing wrong with having a gathering at your home and playing some music, but when your music carries down the end of the block and your neighbors can barely hear their television, it becomes a huge nuisance.
Furthermore, if this behavior is tolerated it's an invitation for others to follow suit. There is strength in numbers and I urge you to call 311 and file a complaint. The address is 120 Brooklyn Avenue. Make sure to write down your complaint number. You can tell the 311 representive that you're a member of The Rebirth of Bergen Street Association, if you want to remain anonymous.

Car Break-Ins
Between last night and this morning about 4 cars were vandalized, including mine. The windows were broken and the interiors were ransacked. Our dvd player and two monitors were stolen and a nominal amount of pocket change. This is concerning.
I'm off to have the glass replaced (an expense I didn't foresee and a trip I did not plan).
Does anyone know the other victims?
What can we do to prevent this?
