The 77Pct at Berean Baptist Church featuring an appearance by Comm. Kelley was very well attended. Well attended by all... except The Bergen Street Block Association.

So Wintertime, Springtime, Summertime, Falltime...
there is never a best time to to attend to our civic, community, and neighborhood issues....

If we're as serious as other blocks and neighborhoods, I suspect we'll have to make time...

Dear Anonymous:

Thank you for your concern about our block's poor representation at the Community Affairs Meeting. We do appreciate the sacrifice you made to be in attendance. Please be cognizant that individuals have busy lives and we are encouraged that we do have participation from a core of dedicated individuals to form a group. For many years no one took the initiative to form an organization that would benefit our block and our surroundings until newcomers moved in. Please note that the number of individuals in attendance at our last four meetings is on average ten people. These individuals are sincere in contributing their time, homes, distribution of letters, signing of petitions, printing of materials and most importantly their ideas in order for us to move forward.

As you know, the formation of our block association/homeowners' association is still in the infancy stage. At this time, we are not considered official by any entity. We have diligently attempted to have a vote for key positions in order to be recognized, but the response has been below par. Last week the voting ballots were put in every mailbox and we are still waiting for responses.

Please be aware that we are not trying to compete with other block associations. We are simply trying to take baby steps that will eventually have a positive impact on our block and the community in which we live. We don’t want to dissuade anyone from being part of this association. We cannot afford to lose the few people we can count on at this point.

We appreciate that you were able to attend the Community Affairs Meeting, but please let’s not rebuke those who were not able to make the meeting. Let’s move forward. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. First and foremost, no personal rebuke meant to anyone.

With work, family and personal issues, its understood that no individual person can be everywhere, all the time.

It is true that newcomers often come armed with fresh initiative. Over the years, varying levels of enthusiasm and vision has contributed to hope for a better sense of community. This is not a new phenomenon, but the hope now is for a different result.

I too think an average of 10 people is encouraging
considering our infancy stage. Further, I don't doubt the sincerity of all who attend, contribute time, and exchange ideas.

However, given the obstacles we face for recognition and the issues we've discussed taking on, I didn't think the notion of infancy would be a comforting place for us.

Reference to other block associations is not meant
negatively, although most of us realize resources are competitively awarded only to those in the know. Accepting invitations to forums in which community groups work the system, I think, helps convey hope and a proprietary sense to the effort we're trying to muster in our neighborhood.

Simply put, I think something sustainable will also include being part of community enthusiasm and empowerment.

So once again no rebuke intended, and apologies if someone was offended.

Most of all, I'm glad we trust each other to speak frankly.
